AMN - TANZANIA: Power station proposal for Tancoal

Intra Energy Corp (IEC) has received a draft technical proposal from Sinohydro Corp for development of the Tancoal mine mouth power station in southwest Tanzania.

Highlights include:

-          Two x 135 MW supercritical pulverised coal injection generating units totalling 270 MW capacity

-          Transmission connection via 220 kV line to the national grid at Mufindi 300 km away

-          Ngaka Power Station to be sited 7 km to north of the proposed Ngaka North coal mine, 3 km from the Ruhuhu River and 80 km northwest from Songea, the regional capital

-          Water intake will be from RuhuhuRiver

-          Annual coal requirement will be approximately 860,000 tonnes

-          Environmental standards are designed to meet World Bank and IFC guidelines with carbon emissions meeting international environmental requirements

-          Potential construction commencement 2018 subject to Government agreement.

IEC is reviewing and commenting on the technical proposal pending completion of the commercial proposal, which was due at the end of August. The technical proposal, which encompasses the EPC guidelines, will be presented to Tanzanian power authorities for appraisal while the commercial proposal is finalised.

IEC Chairman Graeme Robertson says: “I have been impressed by the tenacity of Sinohydro Corporation in the completion of the technical proposal as the EPC contractor and look forward to receiving the commercial proposal to move forward to Power Purchase (PPA) discussions with Government.”

Once the proposals have been submitted and on the basis of positive reaction, work will commence on social and environmental impact assessment (ESIA) and work on the upgrade of secondary access roads will start. Tancoal has sophisticated laboratory facilities and will undertake bulk sampling of product coal from Ngaka North.

Intra Energy’s flagship coal project is the Tancoal mine in the Ngaka coalfield of Tanzania, operated by Tancoal Energy, a joint venture with the National Development Corp of Tanzania.
